A letter I wrote when
I was twelve to an uncle of mine in Nigeria never reached
him because of the Nigerian-Biafran war in the late 1960’s.
Amazingly, the letter was returned to me three years later.
A lot of changes take place in a girl when she’s between
twelve and fifteen. The maturing adolescent was a very
different character to the quiet childlike twelve year-old.
Reading what I had written three years earlier brought home
to me the impact of the written word and its ability to
record a snapshot in time. I have been writing ever since.
I am proud that I was born and grew up in Ireland. I lived
for many years afterwards with my husband and children in
England and Hong Kong before moving to Australia in 1995
where I happily took on Australian citizenship.
The tug of my roots is strong for me. I have been writing
memoir for years. However, my writing credits are more to do
with communicating constantly with all those dear to me,
near and far.
I enjoy playing with words, timing and metre. I occasionally
write ditties, which I dare not call poems. Sometimes I even
get philosophical with social commentary. I consider myself
a purist with the English language (though I speak Irish and
French to some degree), but I am a proof-reader at heart.
I have contributed to the Carindale Writers’ Group
anthologies The Great Aussie Jigsaw and Allsorts of
Allshorts.
